  • Thelma’s Kitchen: A Temporary Pause, With More to Come

Thelma’s Kitchen has always been about more than a meal. It is a place rooted in dignity, welcome, connection, and community.

Beginning September 2, 2026, Thelma’s Kitchen temporarily paused service to outside customers and suspended catering services as Reconciliation Services takes time to evaluate and thoughtfully plan for the Kitchen’s next chapter.

While the café is temporarily closed, our commitment to serving our REVEAL clients continues without interruption. Working alongside community partners, Reconciliation Services will continue providing meals to hundreds of clients each week—continuing a commitment to feeding and caring for our neighbors that has been central to our mission for nearly 40 years.

    What This Means for Volunteers

During this temporary pause, regular Thelma’s Kitchen café volunteer shifts are also on hold.

Volunteers remain an important part of Reconciliation Services, and additional opportunities to serve across our programs, events, and community initiatives will continue to be shared as they become available.

Our hygiene, warmth, school supply, and Foster Grandparent kits continue to be needed and are a great way for volunteer groups to work together, collect needed items, assemble kits, and make a meaningful impact for the neighbors and families we serve.

Over the coming months, we are listening to clients, neighbors, volunteers, donors, partners, and friends of Thelma’s Kitchen as we consider how the Kitchen can best serve our community in the future.

Our hope is to welcome the community back to a reimagined Thelma’s Kitchen during the first quarter of 2027—or sooner, if possible.

Thank you for your continued support of Thelma’s Kitchen and Reconciliation Services. We are grateful to everyone who has served, gathered, shared a meal, and helped make this space so special, and we look forward to sharing what comes next.

In Support of Reconciliation Services
RS has served alongside our neighbors in the urban core of Kansas City, MO, for 30+ years. Desiring to accept the challenge to “love thy neighbor,” we approach each person with dignity and love, seeing them as made in the image of God. Our programs strategically address community needs for affordable food access, safe environments to gather to combat social isolation and build positive community connections, job training and educational support, and increased access to social and mental health services that lead to improved health and self-sufficiency.
